Defenders of the status quo of *mandated* celibacy can say all day "There's no direct link between mandated celibacy and the priest abuse crisis" until they're blue in the face, but in modern mass media communications that does not take away from the de facto PR fact that the public perception -- the mere perception -- is enough to define reality. In an upside down world, perception IS reality. Take any secular comments in any secular news media outlet, and celibate Catholic priests are the laughing stock and butt of jokes. Among American law enforcement, the word "pedophilia" automatically connotes "celibate Catholic priest." Wake up, Church! We live in the modern communications media and social media world. Data and reason sometimes go out the door in favor of soundbites unfortunately. Thus, the perception that mandated celibacy is the cause, whether data is available or not, of the priest sexual abuse crisis is the group psychological perception of today's Catholic priest. That is the secular public outcry for married priests. It's not enough to say, "Oh, we are giving in to the culture," because the culture has a point. It's not clear to the average media consumer that a young priest is or isn't a predator. What's even worse is that, after the Dallas Charter in the 2000s which attempted to address the priest sexual abuse, there was a second wave of lawsuits in the 2010s which suggested -- whether true or not -- that the problem wasn't cleaned up to begin with. Unfortunately, this stains the Catholic priest image. Whether or not having married priests will clean this up is another conversation. Defenders of mandated status quo will say that married people and the general public and teachers and coaches abuse at higher rates than priests, but thats comparing apples to oranges to bananas to onions because, if the married priests came from the ranks of married deacons, the married deacons have less than a <0.01% scandal rate. Married deacons are not the general public! They are viri probati. Tested. Haven't scandalize the public. They are older men. So the public is more apt to accept such married men. It makes sense that conservatives like Gary Franks, to name one, is open to married priests in response to the great scandal of the celibate priest abuse. God save His Church and heal the victims of abuse.
